微量アルブミン尿を示す2型糖尿病に対する約8年間の多因子介入試験終了後約13年間の経過観察時点で、参加者の半数が死亡するまでの時間が強化療法群で約8年延長していた。心脳血管障害の大きな関与が示唆された。

2型糖尿病患者において、細小血管疾患、特にACR300mg/gCr以上、網膜光凝固術の既往があると、重症PADの発症のリスクを増大させる。
大血管疾患の既往は重症PADの発症を増大させるリスクとはいえない。

白内障手術後のRDの危険因子として強度近視、若年齢、水晶体嚢破裂、眼外傷の既往、白内障嚢外摘出手術、男性、糖尿病があげられた。RDは白内障手術後の最も深刻な合併症であり、そのリスクは4年間の研究では0.99%であった。
