出生時の低体重と不健康な生活習慣は相互に影響して、2型糖尿病リスクを高める。2型糖尿病の多くは健康な生活習慣により、予防可能であり、さらに出生時の低体重を引き起こす。要因に対する対策をとれば、羅患者は更に減らせる可能性が示された。また、低出生体重よりも不健康な生活の方が、発症に寄与する割合は高かった。
