高脂肪食による肥満モデルマウスにおいて、防風通聖散は、褐色脂肪のレプチン、アディポネクチン、UCP1 の mRNA 発現量を増加させ、インスリン抵抗性を改善させる。それにより血中レプチン濃度を増加させ、内臓脂肪の量・体積減少、血中中性脂肪濃度を低下させる。

Roux-en-Y 胃バイパス術（RYGB）は、特有のインクレチンによる効果を保持しているが、糖代謝に関しては、 RYGB群は腹腔鏡下胃バインディング術（ＬＡＧＢ）群と比較し、１０％減量の時にはRYGB群で糖代謝の優れた改善を認めるが、より減量が進んだ際には、両群間でその差は減衰していく。
